Manchester City have signed American midfielder Coffey in a major transfer. The deal is worth about $800,000 after months of interest
Manchester City have completed the signing of highly rated midfielder Coffey after agreeing a deal valued at around $800,000 (£600,000). The 27-year-old arrives from the National Women’s Soccer League club Portland Thorns, where she spent the last four years.
City had been tracking the American international for months and made an earlier move in the summer, but that attempt did not go through.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Coffey said City stood out early in discussions, pointing to the team’s playing style and strong bond among players.
“City really stood out from the get-go,” she said. “The style of play attracted me, and when you watch the team, you can see the players are happy, close and connected.”
She added that the timing felt right in her career to take on a new challenge at the highest level.
Coffey explained that she now feels fully settled as a professional and ready to push herself further.
“I’m at a point where I feel prepared for this kind of challenge,” she said. “Now that it’s official and I’m here, it’s an amazing feeling. I’m excited and ready for what’s ahead.”
During her time with Portland Thorns, Coffey made close to 100 appearances and played a key role in the club’s success. She was part of the squad that lifted the 2022 NWSL Championship, cementing her status as one of the league’s standout players.
Her performances in the middle of the pitch earned her a reputation as one of the top defensive midfielders in the women’s game.
Coffey has already earned 42 caps for the United States national team. She was also included in the USA squad coached by former Chelsea boss Emma Hayes that won gold at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Her arrival adds experience, control, and depth to City’s midfield as the club continues to strengthen its squad for domestic and international competition.
Manchester City will hope Coffey’s winning mentality and calm presence translate quickly as she begins the next chapter of her career in England.
