During his eulogy for the late Vice President Saulos Chilima at Bingu National Stadium, President Lazarus Chakwera was jeered by certain members of the audience.
President Chakwera acknowledged the hurt and annoyance felt by the Malawian people over the passing of their leader notwithstanding the heckling.
However, the President stuck to his speech script, stating that he “understands” the suffering Malawians are feeling as a result of the loss.
However, as he went on to ask inquiries about what transpired after the military aircraft crashed, the jeers got louder.
Chakwera stated that he would like to know what caused the jet to go missing and crash since he has the same questions as all Malawians.
In addition, he stated that before the lengthy search for the missing aircraft could begin, he would prefer to know what happened.
He noted that although the Malawi Defence Force has its own procedures for looking into this, it is unable to carry out a comprehensive inquiry; thus, outside assistance is required.
The President promised that an inquiry by impartial specialists will be carried out to determine the cause of the accident.
He voiced his own skepticism and inquiries about the events leading up to Chilima’s death in a military plane crash.
He also admitted that the Malawi Defence Force’s investigative powers were limited.
The president of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, lauded Chilima’s legacy in a different speech, saying he left behind a message of compassion, togetherness, and a devotion to the underprivileged and downtrodden.
Tambala shared the idea that Chilima’s death should be thoroughly investigated.
Ahead of his funeral today, there has been unrest in Saulos Chilima’s hometown, Ntcheu District.
According to social media footage that newsaih.com has viewed, violent episodes that occurred during the Ntcheu evening during the procession carrying Chilima’s remains appear to be depicted.
The violent events that stretched from Lilongwe to Nsipe have been decried by the UTM Party.
UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala and Secretary General Patricia Kaliati urged their followers to abstain from violence while highlighting Chilima’s commitment for peace in remarks to the Nsipe press.
In the meantime, more than 100 police officers have been sent in to bolster security for today’s burial service.
