LeBron James will return to the Lakers for the 2025–26 season
LeBron James has locked in one more season with the Los Angeles Lakers after activating his $52.6 million player option, clearing the way for his historic 23rd year in the NBA — something no player has ever done.
While no official statement has come from LeBron or the Lakers, multiple top sources confirmed the move to the Associated Press. And though the paperwork may be quiet, the message is loud: King James is not retiring just yet
Speaking earlier this month, James said he was using the offseason to rest and recover from a knee ligament sprain that knocked him out during the playoffs. His focus now? “Getting my body as close to 100% as possible before camp.”
The Lakers, seeded third in the West, had their playoff hopes dashed early by the Timberwolves. But LeBron’s return signals the team isn’t giving up the chase for a title.
One of the biggest shifts heading into the new season will be LeBron’s first full campaign alongside Luka Dončić, who landed in LA midseason from Dallas in a blockbuster deal.
Many fans are hoping the LeBron–Luka duo can be the spark the Lakers need to go all the way.
