Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has criticised Benfica manager José Mourinho for the way he handled post-match comments following alleged racist abuse directed at Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior.
Kompany said Mourinho made a “huge mistake” in his response, arguing that influential figures in football carry a particular responsibility when addressing racism and discrimination.
Kompany, who has long been an outspoken voice on issues of equality within the sport, stressed that words from high-profile managers can either support progress or undermine it.
While details of Mourinho’s specific remarks were not fully disclosed, Kompany’s reaction underlined his belief that any response to alleged racist incidents must be clear in its condemnation and supportive of the player targeted.
The Bayern coach pointed out that racism remains a persistent problem in football stadiums across Europe and beyond.
He noted that when a player such as Vinícius Júnior is allegedly subjected to racist abuse, the focus should be on protecting the player, condemning discriminatory behaviour, and encouraging authorities to act decisively.
In Kompany’s view, anything perceived as minimising, deflecting, or reframing the issue risks sending the wrong message to players, supporters, and younger generations watching the game.
Kompany also emphasised that managers, given their visibility and influence, play a crucial role in shaping the culture around their teams and within the wider sport.
He suggested that leaders should be prepared to stand firmly against racism, even in emotionally charged moments after matches. According to Kompany, failing to do so represents a missed opportunity to support affected players and to push for stronger standards within football.
Although specific disciplinary or regulatory consequences related to the alleged abuse were not detailed, Kompany’s comments reflect a broader conversation within the game about how clubs, leagues, and governing bodies respond to racist incidents.
He called for consistent, united reactions from coaches and officials whenever such allegations arise, insisting that clear and unequivocal support for players like Vinícius Júnior is essential in the ongoing fight against racism in football.
