Kenyan Athletes Could Earn Millions Under New Sports Bill

MP Nelson Koech pushes for performance-based rewards in sports.

Kenya’s top sportsmen and women may soon enjoy a major financial boost if a new proposal by Belgut MP Nelson Koech becomes law. The Sports (Amendment) Bill 2025 seeks to make it official: KSh1 million for every goal, point, or win earned on the international stage.

This idea mirrors President William Ruto’s CHAN 2024 pledge, where Harambee Stars were promised KSh1 million for every win — a move many credited for raising morale and uniting fans nationwide.

The proposed Section 55A of the Sports Act outlines that: The Sports Cabinet Secretary, working with the Sports Fund, will award KSh1M for every goal, point, or equivalent scoring unit achieved in approved global competitions. Another KSh1M will be given for each outright win. The incentives will apply to events sanctioned by official international sports federations where Kenya is represented. Payments must be made within 30 days after the competition ends.

Funding will come from the Sports Fund, already established under Kenyan law. The Bill also gives the Cabinet Secretary the power to set clear regulations — including performance verification, eligible sports lists, and how disputes will be resolved.

Koech believes the move will push athletes to perform at their best and raise Kenya’s profile worldwide:

“The CHAN reward promise had a powerful motivational effect. This Bill ensures all athletes — from football and rugby to athletics and volleyball — get the same kind of support.”

If Parliament passes it, Kenyan stars could be pocketing millions while proudly carrying the national flag.
