‘It’s difficult to win in Morocco’—Atlas Lions head coach warns Super Eagles ahead of clash

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has issued a pointed warning to the Super Eagles ahead of Wednesday night’s AFCON 2025 semi-final in Rabat, stressing that facing the Atlas Lions on home soil is a severe test for any team.

Nigeria arrive in the last-four clash in commanding form, having won all five of their matches at the tournament, scoring 14 goals and conceding just four.

Their consistency and attacking output have marked them out as one of the competition’s most efficient sides and a clear threat to the hosts’ title ambitions.

“It is very difficult to win in Morocco”

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Regragui underlined the influence of the Moroccan crowd, drawing comparisons with their previous outing against Cameroon.

“You make your opponent uncomfortable. Cameroon came with confidence and one of their players said it was like Dortmund fans,” he said.

“But that is a big mistake. When you play in Morocco, you have only Morocco fans. You don’t play in Dortmund or Madrid.”

The Atlas Lions boss insisted that the Rabat atmosphere is a decisive factor that opponents only fully appreciate once the match begins.

“This stadium is difficult for every opponent, and you feel this only when you are on the pitch,” Regragui added. “I hope tomorrow the Moroccan fans will do their best for the team. It is very difficult to win in Morocco.”

Nigeria focused on execution, not noise

Despite the psychological pressure being applied from the Moroccan camp, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will be relying on his players’ composure, tactical discipline and mental resilience to neutralise the hostile environment.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris in a statement released on Wednesday, January 14, said Nigerians stand in solidarity with the team.

According to Idris, the journey so far has been inspiring, with the Super Eagles securing victory, match after match.

He also noted that the members of the football team have since the beginning of the tournament showcased discipline, courage, and belief while reminding the whole world why the Super Eagles have remained one of Africa’s most respected teams.

“You have been here before. You know what it takes to win at this level. From past AFCON triumphs to victories against tough opponents, you have always carried Nigeria’s flag with pride. Those victories were not accidents. They came from teamwork, confidence, and a fighting spirit. You have shown that same spirit in this tournament.

“As you step onto the pitch, remember that you are not alone. You carry the hopes of millions of Nigerians. They believe in you and draw strength from your performances. Play with the confidence of champions, the unity of brothers, and hunger. Know your history and your worth,” Idris said.

The Minister further urged the team members to remain focused and committed to give their best in the semi-finals game scheduled to take place today.

“Stay focused, trust one another, and give your best from the first whistle to the last. Win every ball and fight for every chance. Never doubt what you can achieve together. You have earned your place at this stage. You possess the qualities to take it even further.

“Tonight, go out there and write another proud chapter in our football story.

“Play with heart. Play with pride. Play for Nigeria. God bless you, Super Eagles. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Minister added.
