Caleb Amisi has stepped into a heated political and cultural debate in Western Kenya with a message that has quickly drawn public attention.

As discussion grows around the burial of former MP Cyrus Jirongo, the Saboti lawmaker has positioned himself as a voice calling for openness, courage, and respect for culture without fear.

The debate began after attention turned to a Tiriki traditional practice involving the use of a lit torch during burial when death circumstances are unclear.

The ritual is believed to symbolically point to truth and deny peace to anyone responsible for wrongdoing. Once the practice entered public debate, it sparked tension among political leaders and community figures.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya played a role in bringing the cultural issue into the open, linking it to wider concerns surrounding Jirongo’s death. His remarks pushed the discussion beyond family matters and into the political space, where cultural beliefs often carry strong emotions and influence.

The comments did not sit well with some senior leaders. COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli strongly pushed back, arguing that culture should not be used to spread fear or suspicion. He warned that such practices could divide the community if handled carelessly.

He questioned why leaders seemed unsettled by a symbolic ritual rooted in tradition. In his view, culture should not intimidate anyone, especially those who believe they have lived and served honestly.
