Harambee Stars players have earned over KSh 5 million each after reaching the CHAN 2024 quarter-finals.
Kenya’s Harambee Stars are on a financial high following their fairytale run at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.
President William Ruto’s incentive scheme has been central to the windfall: KSh 1 million per win, KSh 500,000 per draw
With two wins and one draw in the group stage, each player has pocketed KSh 2.5 million. The government further rewarded the squad KSh 60 million collectively for reaching the quarter-finals, translating to about KSh 2.2 million per player.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga added to the momentum, pledging KSh 500,000 per player, raising the tournament tally for each squad member to roughly KSh 3 million.
Goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, who starred in the 1-0 win over Morocco, attracted special recognition. Mumias East MP Peter Salasya pledged to cover his rent for three months, praising his composure.
“I will reward Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Omondi by covering his house rent for three months. He is very composed and knows his work. I will just gift the goalkeeper; the other players will be gifted by Ruto,” Salasya said.
The MP went further, promising that if he wins the 2027 presidential election, Harambee Stars players would receive: Retirement benefits of at least KSh 70,000 per month, Comprehensive medical packages, Starting salaries of KSh 450,000, supported by corporate sponsorships.
President Ruto has also hinted at affordable housing units for the players if they advance past the quarter-finals, alongside additional cash rewards.
With KSh 5 million already in their pockets, Harambee Stars now have financial backing to match their on-field momentum and a nation rallying behind them.
