Gladys Wanga says Orange Democratic Movement will not hold coalition talks with Rigathi Gachagua ahead of the 2027 elections, arguing the party will only align with leaders it considers issue-driven and non-divisive even as it signals openness to broader political negotiations.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has firmly dismissed speculation about a possible political alliance between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ahead of Kenya’s 2027 General Election, setting clear conditions for the party’s future coalition strategy.
Speaking during a public event in Kwale County on February 14, 2026, Wanga stated that ODM is willing to negotiate coalition arrangements but only with parties that align with its principles and governance agenda.
She emphasized that the party will not engage leaders it believes promote tribal division or political hostility.
Without naming Gachagua directly, Wanga criticized politicians she accused of advancing divisive rhetoric, saying ODM’s focus remains on unity, policy-driven leadership, and national cohesion.
Her remarks drew strong reactions from supporters present, reinforcing ODM’s stance on coalition values.
ODM’s 2027 Coalition Strategy
Wanga reiterated that ODM’s long-term goal is to form or participate in the next government after years in opposition.
According to her, coalition building remains central to that plan but partnerships must be grounded in shared policy priorities rather than short-term political convenience.
She also backed continued engagement with William Ruto, noting that party leadership has been tasked with exploring cooperation with leaders who demonstrate alignment on governance and development issues.
Coast Representation and Political Positioning
A key theme of Wanga’s remarks was the importance of regional representation in coalition negotiations. She stressed that Coast leaders must remain actively involved in national political discussions to ensure local priorities including development and economic empowerment are addressed.
Her comments come amid ongoing national debate over coalition realignments and succession politics ahead of 2027, as parties position themselves in an evolving political landscape.
Broader Political Context
Wanga linked ODM’s current direction to the political cooperation framework championed by Raila Odinga, describing it as part of efforts to stabilize the country during periods of tension.
She framed coalition politics as a practical path toward governance participation rather than ideological compromise.
As Kenya’s political season gradually intensifies, ODM’s coalition boundaries — and Wanga’s remarks — signal early lines being drawn in preparation for the 2027 contest.
