Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked political debate after publicly endorsing Edwin Sifuna to seek a second term as Nairobi Senator in the 2027 General Election on condition that he aligns himself with the United Opposition.
Gachagua’s unexpected backing of the ODM Secretary General has raised eyebrows across the political divide, coming at a time when alliances ahead of 2027 are beginning to take shape.
Addressing a charged crowd, Gachagua openly praised Sifuna’s political standing in Nairobi, assuring him of continued support in the capital. In remarks delivered partly in Kiswahili, the former DP told Sifuna that his political footing in Nairobi remained solid and that he did not foresee any threat to his re-election bid.
The comments were widely interpreted as a public green light for Sifuna to defend his seat, especially in a city where he has built a strong support base among young voters and urban professionals.
However, Gachagua’s endorsement came with a sharp warning. He cautioned Sifuna against any political cooperation with President William Ruto, using a blunt metaphor to drive his point home.
According to Gachagua, aligning with Ruto would spell political trouble and attract fierce resistance from the opposition camp.
The warning, delivered in a mix of humour and threat, underscored the deep political tensions already emerging as the country inches closer to the next general election.
Political observers note that Gachagua’s remarks signal a growing effort to consolidate opposition forces, particularly in strategic regions such as Nairobi.
His comments also highlight the widening gap between leaders advocating engagement with the government and those pushing for a united opposition front.
Sifuna, who serves as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM), has recently found himself at the centre of internal and national political debates, especially regarding the party’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Analysts believe the endorsement places Sifuna in a delicate position, as he balances party unity, personal ambition, and shifting national alliances.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, Nairobi is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested political battlegrounds. Gachagua’s endorsement and warning has added a new layer of intrigue, leaving many watching closely to see whether Sifuna will heed the advice or chart an independent political path.
One thing is clear: the race for Nairobi has officially begun, and the political stakes could not be higher.
