Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi confirmed that he will continue working with President William Ruto and that ODM will remain part of the government until the 2027 elections and beyond.
Speaking in Ugunja on October 17, Wandayi reaffirmed his loyalty to both ODM and the current government.
“Baba has left us in a government led by President Ruto, and that is where we are going to stay till the end,” Wandayi said.
“We shall walk step by step with President Ruto to the end, now and beyond 2027.”
He described his decision as both personal and reflective of his supporters’ wishes, adding:
“I remain a committed ODM member, but I have decided to work with President Ruto until the very end. Come 2027, I will support him for a second term. That reflects the will of my supporters.”
Wandayi stated that his collaboration with Ruto is a continuation of the late Raila Odinga’s legacy, claiming the late leader had endorsed this partnership before his passing.
“The country is more important than individuals or political parties. When the president invited me to join his government, I accepted without hesitation,” Wandayi added.
Not everyone within ODM agrees with Wandayi’s position. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi criticised him, saying:
“It is not proper for some ODM leaders to come to Baba’s funeral crying that Raila left the Nyanza people in government. Let us mourn first.”
The debate highlights differing views within ODM on balancing party loyalty and government collaboration.
