While the Palestinians trudge through the rubble with their fingers crossed that the ceasefire will hold, diplomacy outside Gaza is running at full speed.

Now the momentum must be maintained, and on Monday another step will be taken on the road to lasting peace between Israel and Hamas when Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi host a peace summit in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

According to the Egyptian presidency, the meeting will be held on Monday afternoon and will be “attended by leaders from more than 20 countries.”

The purpose of the meeting is to create long-lasting peace in Gaza, as well as to “strengthen efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East and usher in a new era of regional security and stability.”

It is unclear at this time whether Hamas will be present at the meeting. According to Al Jazeera, the movement has not announced anything, while The Guardian believes it knows that representatives from Hamas will not appear. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also not announced his participation in Monday’s meeting.

Macron presence

French President Emmanuel Macron is also expected to attend the meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, as are Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has also confirmed his attendance, according to the BBC. Downing Street said the meeting would include a “signing ceremony” for the peace plan, which is intended to “mark a historic turning point for the region after two years of conflict and bloodshed.”

During the meeting, Starmer will thank Egypt, Qatar and Turkey for their important role in the peace plan.

DR has contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to find out whether Denmark will participate in the meeting. They have not heard back by the time this article was published.

In addition to his visit to Egypt, Trump is also expected to speak to the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, early next week.

At the same time, the last hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are expected to be released tomorrow, Monday, Israeli coordinator for the hostages, Gal Hirsch, told CNN.

“We estimate that the release process for your loved ones – our beloved hostages – will begin Monday morning,” the message said.
