Elite Teams Ready for the SWAT Challenge
The DCI Anti-Terror Unit is preparing for an intense regional SWAT challenge that will test precision, agility, and mental strength. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have been training rigorously for this year’s event in Rwanda.
The competition, set to take place at the Mayange tactical training ground, will feature top counterterrorism units from Eastern Africa. These teams will compete to demonstrate their combat skills, teamwork, and strategic thinking.
The event is the first of its kind since the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) was founded in 1998. This year, eight countries will participate in the challenge, making it a historic event for the region.
Countries Competing in the SWAT Challenge
The highly anticipated event will bring together teams from Rwanda, Uganda, Djibouti, South Sudan, Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, and Somalia. Each country has selected elite officers to represent them in this rigorous competition.
Rwanda will field two teams, one for men and one for women, while Uganda will also have two teams, both comprising male officers. The rest of the countries will each send a single team to compete.
A total of ten SWAT teams will showcase their ability to handle high-risk situations through a series of tactical exercises, including hostage rescue, breaching operations, and urban warfare drills.

Kenya’s DCI has earned international recognition for its investigative capabilities. A recent survey ranked the unit as the top investigative agency in Africa, with an impressive 82% approval rating.
The survey, conducted by Kenya Trak, evaluated various agencies based on their effectiveness in solving crimes, operational efficiency, and adoption of modern forensic techniques. The DCI’s high ranking highlights its significant achievements in tackling criminal activities.
Ghana’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) followed closely with a 76% approval rating, while Uganda’s investigative units secured third place with a 74% rating. Ethiopia’s National Bureau of Investigations also performed well, earning a 68% approval rating.
Final Preparations for the SWAT Challenge
With the competition just days away, the DCI Anti-Terror Unit is making final preparations to ensure they deliver a stellar performance. The officers have been undergoing intense training at the Rwanda Counter Terrorism Training Centre.
The training involves high-pressure simulations designed to test their ability to respond swiftly to dangerous situations. These exercises will help them sharpen their skills and enhance their combat efficiency ahead of the challenge.
