School Bus Full Of Passengers Ferrying People to Prophet Owuor’s Crusade Overturns Leaving One Dead and Several Injured along the Eldoret–Webuye highway in a tragic road accident that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
The accident happened at Mukhonje area in Lugari, Kakamega County, a section of the highway that has previously been linked to several fatal crashes.
According to police and eyewitness reports, the school bus was ferrying passengers from a religious crusade held in Nakuru and led by self-proclaimed Prophet David Owuor.
The bus belongs to Moding High School in Busia County and was being used to transport worshippers back to their homes after the overnight New Year celebrations.
The accident is said to have occurred at around 1.00 a.m.
when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn along the highway.
At the time of the crash, the bus was full of passengers, most of whom were tired after the long night journey and the New Year celebrations.
Residents living near the scene said they were awakened by a loud bang and screams from the passengers.
They rushed to the road and found the bus lying on its side, with many passengers trapped inside.
Some of the injured were crying for help, while others were unconscious.
Good Samaritans, including local residents, boda boda riders, and motorists who were passing by, quickly responded to the scene.
They worked together to rescue the injured passengers before police and medical teams arrived.
Several people were pulled from the wreckage and placed by the roadside as they waited to be taken to hospital.
Police later confirmed that one person died as a result of the accident, while at least 30 others sustained injuries of varying degrees.
Some passengers suffered broken limbs, head injuries, and deep cuts.
Those who were seriously injured were rushed to hospitals in Eldoret, while others were taken to nearby health facilities within Lugari for treatment.
Traffic police officers who visited the scene said investigations have been launched to establish the exact cause of the accident.
Preliminary findings suggest that overspeeding or driver fatigue could have contributed to the crash, given the long distance traveled and the late hour.
