Kenya: Spear-Wielding Man Kills GSU Guarding State House

A General Service Unit (GSU) officer guarding State House, Nairobi, was on Monday morning killed in a shocking attack by a man armed with a spear.

The General Service Unit police officer who was speared and killed outside State House in Nairobi has been identified as Ramadhan Khamis Matanka.

An arrow outside Gate D speared him at the official residence of President William Ruto at about 8.15 am.

He was attached to the GSU’s G Company which protects the State House and all State Lodges.

The suspect, identified as Kinyuka Kinyumi, 56, was arrested at the scene.

Police said he told them he was sent by Satan to attack the officer.

“He claims he was sent by Satan to attack the police officer. He killed him and he is lucky to be alive himself,” said an officer aware of the developments.

He told police he walked to the area as directed by the said Satan.

The incident happened along Dennis Pritt Road as the slain officer and two others were inspecting a car that had two occupants ready to drive to State House.

President Ruto was then in State House preparing to leave for Konza City for an event.

Police said the assailant arrived at the scene while carrying a sack and posing as a member of the street families.

He then hid behind a flower bed and reached out his bow and arrow that he used the attack Matanka in the chest fatally.

The arrow pricked the deceased officer’s heart.

He was rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital where he was pronounced dead while being attended to.

The suspect was subdued and arrested at the scene of the attack. He was disarmed of the tools that he used in the mission before being taken to Kilimani police station for grilling where he claimed he was sent by Satan.

Police were grilling him further to get more information on the murder. They wanted to know his background.

“That is why the team on the ground didn’t kill him. They could have easily shot him dead but decided not to and get more on his motive,” said an officer aware of the incident.

An autopsy was planned on the body of the slain officer at the KNH mortuary on Monday October 13, 2025 afternoon after the family said they wanted to bury him. The incident came hours after another GSU officer was strangled and drowned near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after an altercation with a man.

The assailant was arrested following the Sunday October 12, 2025 incident.

The slain officer was manning JKIA fence when the incident happened.

State House and state lodges are guarded by the officers drawn from GSU’s G-Company.

The team also guards the president’s homes and other premises.

The president also has the Presidential Escort Unit which is a fully-fledged team, that can handle the movement of the President and his family anytime.
