Man United Goalkeeper Andre Onana Joins Trabzonspor on Loan

  • Manchester United and Trabzonspor have agreed in principle on a loan move for goalkeeper Andre Onana, pending his final decision before Turkey’s transfer window closes on September 12.
  • Onana’s limited playtime this season, due to Ruben Amorim preferring Altay Bayindir and Onana’s injury problems, has prompted talks of his move.
  • The 29-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper joined United in 2023 for an initial £51 million plus add-ons but has made just one appearance this season, featuring in the Carabao Cup second-round match.
  • Trabzonspor currently ranks second in the Turkish Super Lig, and both clubs await Onana’s final decision, which must be made within five days.
  • If completed, the loan would give Onana more playing time and allow United to manage their goalkeeper options ahead of their upcoming away match at Manchester City.

Andre Onana, who has been a goalkeeper for English football club Manchester United for the past two seasons, has joined Turkish Premier League club Trabzonspor on a one-year loan deal.

ManU, who started this year’s Premier League season with one win, one draw and one loss, completed the loan deal with the Turkish club on Thursday, the day before the Turkish league transfer window closed.

Onana has not played as a goalkeeper for Manchester United this season, with Turkish Altay Bayindir replacing him, but ManU decided to bring in 23-year-old Belgian Senne Lammens at the end of the transfer window. Onana has only played in one game for United this season: in the domestic cup defeat to Grimsby Town, who play in the fourth division .

“We wish Andre well,” ManU said briefly.

ESPN reported that the loan deal does not include an extension or purchase clause, meaning Onana will return to Manchester United next summer, but the Turkish club will pay his wages in full this year. His contract with the English club runs until 2028.

Trabzonspor has won three matches and drawn one in the Turkish Super League, and will face Fenerbahce away on Sunday.

Onana joined Barcelona’s youth academy in 2010, but five years later, at the age of 19, he moved to Ajax Amsterdam, for whom he played for six seasons in the Dutch Premier League.

However, the Cameroonian goalkeeper was handed a 12-month ban for using banned substances in the 2020-21 season and Ajax decided to retire from the goalkeeper’s duties after the 2021-22 season.

Onana spent a year between the posts of Italian Premier League club Inter Milan, but joined Manchester United in 2023, for whom he played two full seasons.
