ConCourt Rejects Edgar Lungu Family’s Appeal Over Burial Site Dispute

The Zambian government has emphasised that the former president should be laid to rest in the capital, in line with state protocol for former heads of state.

The Constitutional Court has dismissed an application by the family of former Zambian president Edgar Lungu, who sought to challenge a High Court ruling on his final resting place.

The High Court had previously ruled in favour of the Zambian government, ordering that Lungu’s remains be repatriated to Lusaka.

Family Insists on South African Burial

Despite the ruling, Lungu’s family remains firm in their wish to have him buried in South Africa, where he passed away in June while receiving medical treatment in Johannesburg.

The Zambian government has emphasised that the former president should be laid to rest in the capital, in line with state protocol for former heads of state.

The ConCourt’s refusal to grant leave to appeal solidifies this position, leaving the family with limited legal options to challenge the order.
