Sudan, Senegal Qualify for CHAN 2024 Quarter-Finals After 0-0 Draw

Sudan and Senegal advance to CHAN 2024 quarter-finals.

Sudan and Senegal have both booked their places in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 after a tense 0-0 draw at Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Tuesday night.

The result means Sudan finishes first in Group D thanks to a better goal difference, while defending champions Senegal go through as runners-up.

The match, billed as the group decider, was cagey and physical, with few clear chances created.

Senegal’s Pape Badji missed two promising opportunities, while Sudan’s Abdel Raouf Yagoub forced a strong save from Marc Diouf with a long-range strike. Just before halftime, Sudan appealed for a penalty, but VAR ruled against them.

In the second half, Musa Hussien fired over from close range for Sudan, while Mohamed Tia Asad also went close. Senegal, frustrated in attack, ended the game with 10 men after Mbaye Yaya Ly was sent off for a second yellow card in added time.

Both teams finished the group stage with five points, but Sudan’s goal difference of +4 gave them the edge over Senegal’s +1.

Elsewhere in the group, Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Congo was not enough to save them, as they finished third and were eliminated.

Looking ahead, Sudan will now face Algeria in the quarter-finals, while Senegal meets tournament hosts Uganda in Kampala. With all three East African co-hosts already in the knockout rounds, fans can expect packed stadiums and high drama in the next stage.
