Pastor Grace Mwende, 43, of Mountain of Hope Chapel, defends her affair with a 22-year-old University of Nairobi law student.
The controversy began when the student’s mother accused Pastor Grace Mwende of influencing her son to drop out of law school. She said he has since moved in with the preacher and cut ties with his family.
“She has taken my son away from his education. I only want him to finish school before making life-altering decisions,” the distraught mother told reporters.
She added that all attempts to convince him to return to class have failed, with her son warning her to “stay out of his private life.”
In a strong defence, the Kasarani-based preacher denied claims of manipulation, insisting their relationship is based on love.
“I have finally fallen deeply in love with him, and things are going well for us,” Pastor Mwende said.
She added that the law student was the one who initially pursued her and dismissed criticism of their 21-year age gap:
“Our love is mutual, and I see nothing wrong with it.”
The affair has sparked sharp debate online. Some accuse the preacher of abusing her influence, while others argue both are consenting adults.
Kenyan law does not criminalise adult relationships, regardless of age difference. However, critics say religious leaders should uphold stricter moral standards, making the case more controversial.
Kenya has witnessed similar scandals involving religious leaders and younger partners, with public opinion often divided between personal freedom and morality.
