Soldiers Checkpoint

On June 25, 2024, South Africa defense force troops from the Infantry Battalion stopped a car at a border checkpoint between South Africa and Lesotho that was carrying R1,430,000 in cash.

Four illegal Lesotho nationals and a woman with a valid passport were discovered inside the car when the troops pulled it up for a regular inspection.

Money in a plastic bags

Authorities found the substantial amount of cash packed in plastic bags when they searched the car.

The reason behind the suspects transporting so much cash was because, although they claimed to be running a business in Durban, they lacked a bank account.

The troops, however, were not persuaded by their justification and quickly turned the accused over to the Maluti SA Police Service for more inquiry.

Uphold Law and Order

Authorities not only detained the individuals but also seized the vehicle.

This seizure represents a significant effort in the area’s border security and anti-smuggling efforts.

Inquiries are still being made to confirm the suspects’ statements and find out where the cash that was confiscated came from and how it was going to be used.

In order to stop criminal activity and guarantee the security of both countries, authorities stress the significance of thorough border checks.

In keeping with its mission to uphold law and order, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) keeps an eye on and secures the border.

This incident serves as a reminder of both the continued difficulties and achievements in maintaining the permeable borders that separate South Africa from its neighbors.
