Political party activity is prohibited in Mali while calls for elections increase.

A directive prohibiting political party activity was issued by Mali authorities on Wednesday in response to demands that the country’s ruling army junta hold elections.

The government spokesperson made the news on Wednesday night on state television. According to Abdoulaye Maiga, the purpose of the political activity prohibition is to uphold public order.

Political party threats to public order were not mentioned in the statement.

When the suspension would be lifted was not specified.

The army has ruled Mali since August 2020. Citing technical problems, the junta announced in September of last year that it would not fulfill its commitment to hold elections intended to restore civilian authority this past February.

There have been no fresh election pledges announced.

In response, a number of political parties and civil society organizations called for elections after the March transition date passed without a vote.
