Micheal Usi ‘Manganya’ replaces late Saulos Chilima as Malawi Vice President

Michael Usi the new Vice President

Michael Usi was named vice president of Malawi on Thursday by President Lazarus Chakwera, following the death of the previous vice president in an aircraft crash last week.

On June 10, a military plane carrying former vice president Saulos Chilima and nine other people perished in a forest crash.

For the presidential election of the following year, Chilima was predicted to run against Chakwera.

According to a statement from the government, Usi will take office on Friday.

This is in accordance with Section 84 of the Republic of Malawi’s Constitution, according to a statement from the Secretary to the President and Cabinet. He will take the oath of office on Friday, June 21, 2024, in the Parliament Building at 15.00 hours.

He was a close ally of Chilima, having been his running mate when he held the position of minister of natural resources and climate change.
