Malawi’s late vice president’s party, UTM, leaves Pres Chakwera Tonse Alliance.

The UTM, the key partner of the Tonse Alliance and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has declared that they have quit the union.

Felix Njawala, the UTM Publicity Secretary, announced the move to the media in Lilongwe on Friday. He stated that the move would result in the party concentrating primarily on the 2025 elections.

On the other hand, he did not reveal whether it would collaborate with another party or operate independently.

According to Njawala, the party is anticipated to convene its elective convention in October this year.

Another announcement that Petra and Aford made not too long ago was that they had departed the alliance.

In the fresh presidential election that took place on June 23, 2020, the Tonse administration, which was led by President Lazarus Chakwera and the late Saulos Chilima, was successful in removing Peter Mutharika from his position as the leader of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP as government).

In the meantime, Patricia Kaliati, the Secretary-General of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), veiledly criticized Michael Usi, the party’s acting president (now Malawi vice president), and other individuals for their absence from the Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting that took place on Friday in Lilongwe.

A number of high-ranking officials, including Usi, did not show up for the meeting. It was originally scheduled to take place at Usi’s official government mansion in Area 12, but for some reason, it was changed to the party’s headquarters.

According to the party’s constitution, an executive member must resign if absent from three consecutive meetings. Kaliati noted that this provision comes from the Constitution.

“Unfortunately, those who did not attend the meeting are displaying double standards,” she said, expressing dissatisfaction with the situation.
