Kenya Former president Uhuru Kenyatta claims State House withholds office budget

Uhuru Kenyatta, the former president, has charged that the State House has withheld the funds allotted for maintaining his office.

Even though Kenyatta was given Sh503 million for the current fiscal year, he insists he hasn’t received any money.

Uhuru: There are no new cars for my office at State House.
Kanze claims that the cars Uhuru is driving are the ones he left with during the Kasarani handover ceremony.

During a press conference, Uhuru made accusations about using cars that were supplied to him temporarily through his spokesperson Kanze Dena.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta received 12 cars from the Kenyan government last month, according to a list provided by government spokesman Isaac Mwaura, for their daily use.

Reports that the government purchased new cars for retiring President Uhuru Kenyatta’s office in accordance with the constitution have been refuted by his office.

During a press conference, Uhuru made accusations about using cars that were supplied to him temporarily through his spokesperson Kanze Dena.

“After the transition, a conversation on the purchase of the vehicles as required by the Act commenced between the two offices…,” Kanze stated.

“The cars were identified right down to their color, and then the conversation stopped. Nod discussions have started again, but we’re not sure if the cars were bought or not.”

According to Kanze, the former First Lady’s cars are a Range Rover, a Mercedes Benz, and two Toyota Land Cruisers.

She continued by pointing out that the retired president’s security detail uses three of the four Toyota Prados that were allotted to him.

This is on top of the Subaru Forester and the Toyota Prado that the office uses.

“What the government spokesperson did not clarify is that the vehicles were not new,” she said.

Kanze also claimed that Uhuru was allowed to use the cars until they were buying new ones, in accordance with the Presidential Benefits Act, as per the arrangement with the Statehouse.

However, the government of Kenya provided former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta with 12 automobiles for their daily use, according to a list provided by government spokesman Isaac Mwaura last month.

Former heads of state are eligible for generous retirement benefits under the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act of 2003, which include over 30 employees, luxury cars, limitless health insurance, and up to four vacations abroad every year.

“The third retired president Uhuru Kenyatta is by law entitled to 4 vehicles at the expense of the state, whereas the former first lady HE Mama Ngina Kenyatta is entitled to enjoy half the benefits of a retired president, as a spouse to a former head of state,” Mwaura stated.

Four Toyota Prados with 2,700cc engines, two Range Rovers with 4,200cc engines, one Mercedes Benz with 5,000cc engine, and two Toyota Land Cruisers with 4,000cc engines are among the vehicles.

According to Mwaura, the other vehicles are a Subaru Forester with a 2,000cc engine and two Range Rovers with 5.000cc engines.

“The government fully finances and maintains these vehicles. To make it easier for them to fill up their cars, the former president has been given four fuel cards, and Her Excellency Mama Ngina Kenyatta has been given three,” Mwaura stated.
