Driver, passenger and boy perish in a road accident in Lilongwe.

in approximately 15:00 on Saturday, May 4, 2024, in Thiwi Leisure Centre, Mpingu, a vehicle carrying three people—including the driver and a two-year-old boy—was engaged in a head-on collision with a lorry. The other victims suffered injuries.

Kelvin Momani, 28, a driver, Tadala Shadreck, 2, and an unidentified woman, who was a passenger, have been identified as the deceased.

Tennis Likaomba, 46, was traveling from Mpingu toward M’bwatalika on the Lilongwe-Mchinji M12 road when she drove a Nissan Diesel Lorry with the Ministry of Justice’s registration number, MG 926A.

He began to overtake the approaching Honda Freed Hatchback, registration number BZ 3327, driven by the deceased Kelvin Momani, who had seven passengers in the car, as soon as he arrived at Thiwi Leisure Centre.

After the collision, two passengers—Shadreck and an unidentified woman—suffered serious head injuries, while the driver of the Honda Freed, Momani, suffered several fractures. When they arrived at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), they were all declared deceased.

From the Honda Freed vehicle, five people managed to escape with varying degrees of injuries. At the aforementioned referral hospital, they are currently receiving medical care.

According to initial inquiries into the collision, Tennis Likaomba, the lorry driver, was operating the vehicle while impaired by alcohol. He texted after consuming 0.83 mg of alcohol, which is more than what is permitted for someone operating a vehicle.

Likaomba, a resident of Chilepa Village, T/A Kwataine, Ntcheu, is being held by the police and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. She is being charged with three counts: driving while intoxicated, causing serious injuries, and causing death.

Salima, Tadala Shadreck, and Kelvin Momani, the deceased, were from Mbamba Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Khombedza, while Nkhomphola Village, T/A Mavwere, was in the Mchinji District.
