Two Malawian nationals were taken into custody when SAPS stopped an attempt to smuggle a car from Gauteng to Malawi.
A stolen Toyota Fortuner 2.8, worth R900,000, was being transported from Gauteng to Malawi via the Beitbridge border post when the South African Police Service (SAPS) successfully stopped suspected vehicle smugglers.
Based on the information obtained, an operational squad of SAPS followed the suspicious car along R519 Bergnek Road. A spectacular high-speed chase that culminated in the car’s interception close to Lunds farms in the Westenburg police district occurred despite early attempts to stop the vehicle.
The Toyota Fortuner was reported stolen on Sunday, March 24, 2024 in Bedfordview, Gauteng Province, according to preliminary investigations.
Two male suspects from Malawi, ages 33 and 36, were apprehended and accused of possessing a motor vehicle that was likely stolen. They are also charged under the Immigration Act.
The prompt and resolute measures implemented by the SAPS emphasize the organization’s dedication to battling international criminality and protecting South Africa’s boundaries from unlawful undertakings.
When law enforcement organizations work together, it acts as a disincentive to those who may otherwise attempt to use cross-border channels for illicit purposes.
