No coalition between the ANC and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) will be formed as long as Cyril Ramaphosa is the party’s president. In short, the party is demanding that Ramaphosa resign right away.
To be clear, we are in favor of Ramaphosa’s removal. Although we met with the ANC today and are in communication with them, this is not Ramaphosa’s ANC.
The ANC is aware that ensuring his resignation is the first step toward saving this nation. MK spokeswoman Ndhlela states, “There are individuals in the ANC who are fighting for their own interests and do not want him to leave, but there is broad agreement among important ANC figures that he must leave for the good of the nation.
His remarks coincide with the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) declaration that, should the MK, EFF, or Patriotic Alliance be included in the ANC’s proposed Government of National Unity (GNU), the DA will not join it.
While the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has decided to join the GNU, which also comprises the ANC and DA, the EFF and the MK have both stated time and time again that they will not cooperate with the DA. Currently, the DA and the IFP share municipal governance responsibilities in KwaZulu-Natal.
The ANC, which is still the largest party while having a smaller majority, is now forced to make a decision. Either a broad-based black alliance without the DA, or a coalition with the DA but without the MK and EFF.
However, a GNU will still need to pass through a number of difficult obstacles before it can be completed, even in the absence of the DA. These include, among other things, the EFF’s demands for the Finance portfolio and the position of parliamentary speaker.
Nhlamulo stated that if ANC members took the necessary steps to advance the nation, the party was optimistic about a resolution.
“Fikile has ambitions of being the president of the ANC, what he says publicly and what he does behind the scenes is another thing,” Nhlamulo said in response to questions regarding remarks made by ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula that Ramaphosa would not be quitting the party.
There are more people who want Ramaphosa removed than who want him to stay. However, the ANC would dissolve itself if it chose to form a coalition with the DA. That is assured.”
