Tyla Laura Seethal and Ndivhudzannyi “Makhadzi” Ralivhona, two South African artists, demonstrated their talent, impact, and global influence by winning top accolades at the BET accolades 2024.
The awards, which were first presented in 2001, honor black excellence in sports, music, entertainment, and philanthropy. The BET Voting Academy, a group of professionals from the media, music, creative arts, and sports journalism industries, selected this year’s candidates.
The Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California, served as the venue for Sunday night’s awards event.
Best New Artist Tyla
The 22-year-old phenomenon Tyla, who gained popularity with her viral song “Water,” took home the Best New Artist and Best International Act awards.
February saw her win a Grammy as well.
BET posted a picture on X with the message, “Africa to the World!” “Congratulations on winning Best New Artist, Tyla, to the attractive girl from Johannesburg.”
“I just wanted to say thank you so much to my family, my team, and my Tygers [Tyla’s nickname for her fans]—I didn’t prepare anything. “I am grateful to BET for consistently promoting cultural diversity,” Tyla remarked at her Best International Act presentation.
With a live, safari-themed, high-energy performance of “Jump” from her debut album, which featured American rapper Gunna and Jamaican dancehall artist Skillibeng, the megastar from Johannesburg stunned the audience.
Best International Act honor was Makhadzi
The winner of the BET Viewers Choice: Best International Act honor was Makhadzi from Limpopo.
Since it was also her birthday, her victory was very meaningful.
Makhadzi’s success solidifies her status as a standout performer. She is well-known for her distinctive musical style and captivating stage presence.
To celebrate her achievement, Makhadzi posted a message on her X (previously Twitter) page, saying, “Congratulations to myself and all my people who have been supporting me.”
Wearing a red couture dress, the musician from Limpopo accepted the trophy. Makhadzi expressed her gratitude with a Venda-style bow and lay down on her side.
These victories not only represent individual accomplishments but also have global significance for South African music, serving as an inspiration for upcoming African music performers.
Gayton McKenzie, the recently appointed South African Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, commended their achievements on X.
“Congratulations to both women; things are moving forward already. We would like to reassure South Africans that our Ministry will not stop at merely congratulating artists and creatives; rather, we will actively search for future Tylas and Makhadzis. Aid us in locating additional stars of the future.”
Killer Mike was named Album of the Year. Tyla was nominated for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, but Sza won the award. Usher was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist.
