On Wednesday, President Joe Biden tested positive for the coronavirus while trying to win back the support of disillusioned voters essential to his reelection chances. This caused him to cancel a meeting with Latino civil rights group members in Nevada, a battleground state.
After testing positive, Biden couldn’t give a speech at the UnidosUS annual conference in Las Vegas.
The White House says that his speech was meant to make an announcement: starting August 19, certain spouses of U.S. citizens who don’t have legal status can begin asking for permanent residency and eventually citizenship without having to leave the country first.
Last month, Biden talked about the new program, which could help more than 500,000 immigrants.
The meeting with Latino activists was planned while the Republican National Convention was being held in Milwaukee; Biden was trying to steady his shaky reelection campaign after his terrible showing in the debate against Trump on June 27. A 20-year-old shooter tried to kill Trump on Saturday in Pennsylvania, which made the campaign even more difficult. Now, Biden’s health is a problem because of the coronavirus test.
Before the White House announced that Biden was sick, the president stopped by the Original Lindo Michoácan Restaurant, talked to customers, took selfies, and mingled with them as he went from table to table before an interview with Univision.
If Biden wants to stay in the White House for four more years, he needs strong support from Black and Latino voters. These two groups were essential to his winning alliance in 2020, but their support is starting to waver.
In a Tuesday interview with BET News, Biden said he still has much time to get people excited about voting.
Biden said in the interview, “All of those young people—young Black people, young White people, young Hispanic people, and young Asian Americans—never really paid attention until after Labor Day.” “The thought that they’re focused on the election right now is not there.”
However, things were getting worse for Biden even before his stink show in the debate, which made many Democratic lawmakers and fundraisers want him to quit the race.
American Hispanics don’t like Biden as much as they did when he first became president. An AP-NORC poll in July found that only 36% of Hispanic adults have a somewhat optimistic view of Biden. This is down from about 6% of Hispanic adults in January 2021. About two-thirds of Hispanic people don’t like Biden either.
Tuesday, Biden spoke at the annual NAACP conference in Las Vegas. In his speech, he said that Trump’s four years in office were “hell” for Black Americans. He slammed Trump for not handling the coronavirus pandemic well, for the fact that unemployment was going up early in the pandemic, and for using hurtful language that drove people apart.
He also made fun of Trump for saying that immigrants who came to the U.S. during the Obama administration are taking “Black jobs.”
“I know what a Black job is.” “That’s Vice President Kamala Harris,” Biden said. He went on to say that she “could be president.”
Biden also talked about how he set up Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, and how he was vice president under Barack Obama, the country’s first Black president.
This new plan from the Biden administration about partners came out just a few weeks after Biden announced a major crackdown at the U.S.-Mexico border that stopped people from claiming asylum who came in between official ports of entry. Immigration rights groups have sued the Biden administration over that order, which officials say has made it easier for people to cross the border between ports.
Biden was also going to sign an order creating a White House effort to improve opportunities at Hispanic-serving institutions, which are 500 two-year and four-year colleges across the country with large Hispanic populations.
Will Joe Biden quit as a presidential candidate for the Democrats?
Many people have strong feelings about the idea that US Vice President Joe Biden might quit as a Democratic presidential candidate.
According to reports, Biden said he might drop out of the race if doctors find a “medical condition.”
This comes after the Associated Press and NORC found that 65% of Democrats want Biden to drop out of the presidential race.
During the debate, Biden did terribly against Donald Trump, the Republican candidate.
After the June discussion, CNN conducted a quick poll and found that Trump had 67% of the vote, while Biden had only 33%.
Analysts have different ideas about who could be considered Biden’s alternative.
It’s not hard for the Democrats to find a new presidential candidate.
Choosing a different candidate at the Democratic Party National Convention, which starts on August 19, “remains open,” so Biden can be changed.
