Following Blue Lagoon, a pregnant woman and her unborn child perished in an accident on the M4 northern Freeway.
ALS Paramedics director Garrith Jamieson said chaos greeted them when they arrived on the scene.
“Paramedics responded to a rear-end collision involving two cars and discovered several injured individuals. More ambulances and advanced life support paramedics were sent out right away to help.
After assessing the situation, paramedics discovered that eight victims had different types of injuries. One woman in her thirties went into cardiac collapse on the scene and was in severe condition. She was nine months pregnant.
The woman was given advanced life support by paramedics, and it was decided to head straight to the hospital for help. When paramedics got to the adjacent hospital, a gynecologist was ready to help. Mom and baby both passed away from their wounds despite all efforts,” he said.
The remaining seven patients, three of whom were children, he continued, were stabilized on the spot and then taken to different hospitals in Durban so they could receive the additional care they needed.
“The circumstances leading up to the collision are unknown at this time, but SAPS was present and will be conducting additional investigation,” he stated.
