Many are feared dead as a boat capsizes on Kenya’s Tana River
A boat that was ferrying them overturned in the Kona Punda village in Madogo, Tana River county, and several persons are thought to be dead.
The boat reportedly overturned on Sunday night while transporting a number of people as it came into choppy seas.
The boat was reportedly bound toward Mororo, a town that is on the boundary of the counties of Tana River and Garissa.
As of the time this story was published, police were reportedly on the site, and rescue operations were still under progress.
By the time this story went to press, the precise number of people who may have died was unknown.
Additionally, the Kenya Red Cross verified that a team from its offices in Tana River and Garissa County had been dispatched to the location.
The Red Cross said, “Our teams from Tana River County and Garissa are currently responding to the situation.”
According to reports, for the previous three days, the boat and three others had been transporting passengers across the swollen Tana River.
It is reported that the venture’s owners had been charging the locals a significant amount to transport them across.
The incident occurred just one week after six individuals lost their lives when a boat carrying churchgoers in Lake Baringo overturned.
