The 38-year-old Abdullah Nandi has been taken into custody by the police in Namwera, Mangochi, on suspicion of harming Major Majid, a 20-year-old man who is believed to be a criminal.
Nandi allegedly caught Majid stealing tomatoes from his garden and then dragged him along the road while tied to his Ford Courier.
The event occurred around dawn on March 24, 2024, in the Mangochi settlement of Mkambiri, within the Traditional Authority of Bwananyambi.
The event was brought to the attention of the police when a video showing Nandi and his accomplices dragging Majid behind the truck as a kind of punishment went viral on social media.
Namwera detectives wasted no time in stepping in and taking Nandi into custody as they learned the scene of the crime.
Majid was apprehended earlier that day for allegedly stealing tomatoes from Nandi’s garden, according to preliminary findings.
After that, he was led to the Masuku Police Unit and tortured while being led along an earth road, about 200 meters away.
Majid is currently receiving medical attention at the Namwera Health Centre after sustaining severe bruises.
Acts with the intent to cause grave hurt, in violation of section 235 of the Penal Code, are the charges against Nandi.
Once all the required paperwork is finished, he will make an appearance in court.
The district’s police are warning residents against trying to stop these types of crimes by enforcing their own laws.
Mkambiri hamlet, Mangochi’s Traditional Authority Bwananyambi, is the hometown of both the accused and the victim.
