DA declares it will quit GNU if Ramaphosa “changes cabinet deal.”

South Africa: According to reports, the DA threatened to break off their deal with the ANC if Ramaphosa did not accept the original offer.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) leadership decided to inform President Cyril Ramaphosa that he must accept the party’s initial offer of cabinet jobs, which may have put the African National Congress (ANC) and DA’s agreement in jeopardy.

According to News24, the DA threatened to sever ties with the ANC if Ramaphosa did not accept the original offer.

The updated offer by Ramaphosa is “not acceptable.”

On Wednesday night, Ramaphosa allegedly changed the wording of the offer, substituting the minister of tourism for the minister of the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC).

The DA’s leadership and negotiation team are allegedly incensed about Ramaphosa reversing his offer after the DA accepted it.

According to the article, it is acknowledged that Ramaphosa’s amended offer is “not acceptable” both the negotiating team and the party’s higher leadership.

It was previously stated that Ramaphosa will likely make a cabinet decision shortly, opening the door for the end-of-week installation of the GNU executive.

GNU parties’ portfolios

The nation is waiting for Ramaphosa to name a new cabinet, but this newest event might cause the announcement to be postponed.

It is believed that on Wednesday night, Ramaphosa gave DA leader John Steenhuisen a call to reaffirm his commitment to provide the party with seven deputies and six portfolios. According to reports, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and GOOD party would each receive one portfolio, while the Inkatha Freedom Party is expected to receive three.

At first, the DA demanded the deputy president position along with its sights set on 11 Cabinet positions, their deputies, and director-general portfolios.
