Police beat young people for holding an unauthorized meeting
On Tuesday, a leader of the opposition in Zimbabwe and around a hundred young people who had been detained for two nights for allegedly conducting an unauthorized gathering appeared in court in Harare and reported being attacked by police.
Arriving at the court in discomfort
Members of the Citizens Coalition for Change, or Triple C, Zimbabwe’s opposition group, appeared in court Sunday under heavy police guard, several of them limping and one with a fractured leg.
On June 18, 2024, a member of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change, also known as Triple C, the biggest opposition party in Zimbabwe, sobs as she is brought into the Harare Magistrates Court. She has a damaged leg.
Even yet, one individual continued to yell at reporters who were waiting
He asked, “Are you hearing me?” This government told the women to get on their knees and crawl to a waiting police truck.
Claps strike us, buttons stick. A woman had her room broken into. Why? All she wore was a bra. Please make a note of that. These folks are vile.
The opposition members’ police companions declined to comment
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights is represented by attorney Tinashe Chinopfukutwa.
Reporters were informed by Tinashe Chinopfukutwa, an attorney with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, that his clients had suffered mistreatment during their incarceration.
“They have been charged with inciting public violence, bigotry, and breaches of peace through their involvement in a gathering,” Chinopfukutwa stated.
An alternative allegation of unruly conduct in a public place has also been preferred by them.
When the cops arrested them, they had been assaulted
While putting on their clothes, some of them were coerced into diving into an unclean swimming pool.
After that, they had to crawl to a police car that was parked a few meters away. We’re going to forward those grievances to the judge.
According to Chinopfukutwa, the police first detained over 100 opposition activists, including Jameson Timba, the group’s head, but some of them were later freed for unclear reasons.
On June 18, 2024, Jameson Timba, the acting head of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change, or Triple C, the biggest opposition party in Zimbabwe, arrives at the Harare Magistrates Court.
In honor of International Day of the African Child on Sunday, party members were detained at Timba’s residence, according to Agency Gumbo, a lawyer and Triple C member of parliament.
He claimed that the purpose of the arrests was to put an end to opposition operations that had begun throughout the roughly 40 years that the late President Robert Mugabe was in office.
On June 18, 2024, Agency Gumbo, a parliamentarian for the Citizens’ Coalition for Change, or Triple C, informs reporters that party members had suffered abuse at the hands of the police in Harare.
This means that the dictatorship is determined to silence dissenting voices and to silence the opposition, according to Gumbo. It appears as though the opposition has been outlawed. It appears as though the Triple C and other opposing forces are prohibited from entering this nation.
On Monday, though, he said that everyone in the nation was subject to the law and that anyone who broke the law would face the full force of the law.
Attorneys protesting their detentions
The remaining 79 detainees were held until Wednesday, when it is anticipated that they will contest their arrests.
They contend that before being sent to court on Tuesday, they were held longer than the 48 hours permitted by the constitution.
