Tragically, weeks later, their worst fears were confirmed. The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kuilsrivier, a distance of over 25 kilometers from Gugulethu, discovered a body burned beyond recognition inside a bungalow. DNA testing revealed the heartbreaking truth: the remains belonged to Ongeziwe.
The news sent shockwaves through the community. Ongeziwe, described by teachers and classmates as a dedicated and friendly student, had her whole life ahead of her. “She was always willing to help others and had a bright smile that could light up a room,” said a tearful friend during a recent memorial service. “We can’t believe she’s gone.”
Adding to the outrage is the recent release on bail of a 28-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder. The suspect, whose name has not been released due to ongoing investigations, appeared before the Blue Downs Magistrates Court on March 3rd, 2024. Despite the gravity of the charges – murder and robbery – the court granted him bail of a mere R1000 ($50). He is not due back in court until April 17th.
SAPS officials maintain that the investigation is ongoing and declined to comment on the specifics of the case or the bail decision. However, they assured the public that they were committed to bringing Ongeziwe’s killer to justice.
Meanwhile, Fezeka High School has established a grief counselling program for students and staff impacted by Ongeziwe’s loss. The school principal, in a statement, described Ongeziwe as a “valued member of the Fezeka family” and expressed his deepest condolences to her family and friends.
