12 Malawian field laborers in Israel deported.

Twelve laborers who had been assigned to work on fields and orchards but had walked off have been deported, according to Malawi.

According to a statement from Moses Kunkuyu, the government spokesman for Malawi, the workers “in breach of their contracts… abandoned their lawful employment at the farms to start working at the bakery.”

As part of a government labor export initiative, hundreds of Malawians have been traveling to Israel since November in an attempt to create jobs for young people and generate much-needed foreign exchange.

An economic crisis that has resulted in significant reductions in government spending has left many Malawians jobless.

Since the catastrophic Hamas strikes on October 7, which set off the Gaza conflict, thousands of workers have left Israel’s farms, a vital sector of the country’s economy.

Countless foreign laborers were among the 252 individuals abducted.

The remaining employees, many of whom are young men and women, are forewarned by Lilongwe that a violation of the contract will “not be tolerated.”

“Desist from such behavior as it puts this country into disrepute,” Kunkuyu exhorts employees.

Four of the twelve workers returned to the country in southern Africa on Tuesday after undergoing processing, and the remaining eight will do so on Wednesday, according to the state.
